If you’ve never visited Minneapolis, why not come early and make a vacation out of it? For those who are thinking of extending their stay in the Twin Cities area, mid-July is the perfect time. There is plenty to satisfy all interests.
The big event going on in the Minneapolis area at that time is the Aquatennial, from July 12-20 (http://www.aquatennial.com/). Because Minneapolis is located on the Mississippi River, and because it is also known as the “City of Lakes,” the Aquatennial celebrates the area’s affinity for water. There are parades, outdoor concerts, fireworks, milk carton boat races, sand castle building contests, and a host of other activities spanning the two weekends before and after the MRMW conference.
Minneapolis is home to the Mall of America (http://www.mallofamerica.com/). This is the USA’s largest indoor shopping mall. It is the state of Minnesota’s biggest tourist attraction, and houses over 400 shops, dozens of restaurants, and a wide variety of entertainment options, including movies, an amusement park, bowling, and an aquarium.
If you are into Major League Baseball, the Minnesota Twins have three home games scheduled for the Fri-Sun following MRMW (http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com). Target Field is only a few years old and is widely regarded as one of the best new baseball stadiums in the nation. For those who are more interested in food and drink than baseball, the stadium is known for showcasing mostly local food purveyors as well as locally brewed beer.
For those who are interested in live theater, Minneapolis is said to be second only to New York City in theater seats per capita. From the world-class stages of the Guthrie Theater http://www.guthrietheater.org/) and the Tony Award-Winning Children’s Theater Company (http://www.childrenstheatre.org), and to dozens of smaller theaters, there is bound to be something to capture the theater-goer’s interest before, during, or after your MRMW stay.
Because summer is so short in this upper Midwest city, the warm-weather months are vigorously celebrated. Many restaurants expand seating to the outdoors so that diners can soak in the fresh air. Many of the lakes located within the city have sandy beaches that are open for swimming. The city park system includes nearly 50 miles of cycling and walking paths that connect the chain of lakes within the city. Because of the short season, homeowners tend to put extra effort in beautifying their gardens, making residential neighborhoods a visual feast to walk, jog, bike, or drive through.
